Peanut Days
Selling peanuts has been a Kiwanis tradition. Most
clubs have, in some form or another, sold peanuts as
a fund raising project. The Bloomington Club is no exception.
The Bloomington Club voted to authorize the first Peanut
Day before 1960, however, it was either unsuccessful
or the bookkeeping was not detailed, as the first recorded
revenue from peanut sales was 1976. Over 30 years later,
selling peanuts is still a major fund raising tool for
our club. The Town of Normal as generously allowed us
to sell at several established corners. Bloomington
passed an ordinance prohibiting "canning" about 1999.
We have added Saturday collections at grocery and department
stores to supplement the revenue from selling on street
intersections. We expect to bring in $8,500 to help
support our projects. Our best revenue year was over
$14,000, just before loosing the Bloomington corners.
All proceed from fundraising are used for community
service projects. All club administration cost is kept
in a separate fund. All administration costs for the
club are paid by members through dues and meal charges.
Our largest project is Camp
Limberlost, providing a week of camp experience
for 130 campers each year.
