BJ Wilken introduced Dr. Beth Timilty, Cardiologist and Vein Specialist at Carle Bromenn.
Dr. Timilty reviewed in detail the physiology of the heart, including information about the chambers, arteries, and veins, and the "electrical system". In cardiology, there are a number of procedures and processes that can improve heart function and the health of the patient.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Cardiovascular disease primarily includes blockages in arteries and veins. A number of factors lead to this disease, including diet, smoking, obesity, cholesterol, hypertension, and more. Smoking has decreased dramatically over the last couple decades, but smoking rates remain high with those in the lower socio-economic demographic. In the US, 6.7 million people have cardiovascular disease.
Cardiovascular disease remains prevalent due to poor diets of fast food and processed food, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and lack of exercise. In the last 10 years, cardiac deaths for people under 40 years old have doubled.
